Welcome to The Hill Country Museum located in beautiful downtown Kerrville, Texas! Our museum is housed in the Captain Charles Schreiner home, which was built in 1879. Captain Schreiner moved from his Turtle Creek Ranch to a lumber house on the site of The Hill Country Museum in 1869. In 1879, Hermann Stiller built the south portion of the house, with the remainder of the home and the decorative rock work being completed in 1896. The home was designed by Austin, Texas architect Alfred Giles, and is built of native stone. Expert masons and stone carvers were brought from Germany to create the intricate design work that is featured on the exterior of the house. Other interesting features include a beautiful parquet floor made of 10 different hardwoods and original pocket doors which were copied from those at Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello. The Hill Country Museum also boasts a vintage piano that was brought to the Texas Hill Country by covered wagon and a trap door that leads to a tunnel that was used by the Captain to store money for his cowboys. During his long and exciting life, Captain Schreiner was a cowboy, a Texas Ranger, a country store manager, a Civil War Soldier, a cattle rancher, a marketer of wool and mohair, a banker and a philanthropist. The Hill Country Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We are closed on Sundays, but open on most holidays.
